I work for the factory, the income tax and the insurance already, that's enough for a bit. They rob you right, left and centre. After they've skinned you dry you get called up to the army and get shot to death

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner

As the 1950s closed and the new dawn of the 1960s broke, London’s heartbeat became the pulse of a global creative revolution. Three monumental filmmakers - Tony Richardson, Karel Reisz and Lindsay Anderson set the pace. At the forefront Richardson, John Osborne and producer Harry Saltzman’s prolific production company, Woodfall. It’s founders and collaborators were among the original angry young men and were hell bent on revolutionising the conservative and comfortable arts scene. They created Free Cinema and established a brave new face for British Film.
